I’m most interested in the technical aspect of design, how a building comes together to express the designer’s vision.

High tech equipment like MRIs fascinate me with all the circuits and widgets inside that make them work. A building is a lot like a machine with its structural and MEP systems—the HVAC, power and the lighting. My goal is to make sure that what’s above the ceiling and behind the walls—what allows the building to “work”—fits inside those spaces.

A lot of the work I do is on construction sites. The first thing I ask the contractors is, ‘How’s everything fitting?’ That’s how I know what’s working and what’s not. If you get it right during the rough-in period of construction, the building goes together a lot smoother.

I spend half of my time in the office and half in the mud. I like being in the field helping the contractor put the pieces together and seeing the owner’s dream become a reality.
